Exercise Fall Resilience for Life's Daring Adventures

Exercise Resilience

Helen Keller is quoted a saying "life is a daring adventure or nothing at all". This always amazed me. This year I have learned a great deal about resilience. As I explain in this article, today I am celebrating this magical blend of flexibility and strength that comes from a whole-person approach to healing, health and habits.

I was all ready for surgery this morning to repair a rotator cuff tear from an injury that happened in July. I slipped on wet steps and fell directly on my right arm. After months of rehabilitation, I am much stronger, and I have a great range of motion. However, when I started lifting weights again, it became clear that it was not improving. An MRI showed a large tear that needs surgical repair.  🥳

🫸 However, I received a call from the surgical center this morning that the surgeon is ill and needs to reschedule.

Exercise for Fall Resilience

This is exercise resilience for Fall Resilience. We will not prevent falls, but we can be resilient in each part of a fall

✅ Catching ourselves when off balance

✅ Being strong and flexible when we do fall, so there is less chance of injury

✅ Being strong enough to get up from a fall

✅ Having self-compassion and movement skills to support healing from injuries

✅  Adjusting your approach when your body tells you it needs something different in order to heal

✅ Adjusting your plans when your surgeon has to cancel at the last minute

I am forever grateful for the practice of mindful science-based movement to prepare me to be resilient in each part of this process of living in a body on a planet with gravity.

Falls will happen. We cannot fully prevent them. Believe me, Im all about prevention, but I find sometimes it can also cause much pain and suffering when we seep in self-doubt, believing we didn't do enough, or should be doing more. That is when prevention is detrimental.

We can use the signals our body is sending us to see life as a daring adventure rather than a series of mishaps, problems, and shortcomings.

From the moment this injury happened I have been learning a great deal about myself and my body and the power of whole-person health, healing, and habits.  It is informing my work, my upcoming book, and my clinical exercise coaching with clients and patients.

Bonus.... I got to have breakfast and extra time today!!! 🥳
